Description

The Gin & Tonic has a long and fascinating history dating back to the 18th century. British soldiers in India at the time drank quinine water to protect themselves from malaria. Since the taste of quinine was very bitter, they mixed it with gin, sugar, and limes to make it more palatable. This is how the first "Gin & Tonic" was created as a medicinal drink. Today, quinine is only present in small amounts in tonic water, but the combination of the gin's botanical notes and the tonic water's tart, refreshing carbonation has remained. The simplicity of the drink allows for endless variations by experimenting with different gins and garnishes.

Preparation

  1. Fill a copa glass or highball glass with plenty of ice.
  2. Pour the gin over the ice.
  3. Top with chilled tonic water.
  4. Stir gently with a bar spoon to avoid losing the carbonation.
  5. Garnish with a lime slice or zest and serve immediately.
